Overview

Embarking from Glasgow, our northbound journey takes us to our initial destination, The Deanston Whisky Distillery. Nestled alongside the mighty River Teith, this distillery sources all its water from this powerful river, contributing to the creation of its remarkable flavors and aromas. Notably, the River Teith also generates electricity through a series of turbines, making the distillery an environmentally friendly operation. During the distillery tour, you'll gain insights into the intricate process of transforming water, malted barley, and yeast into Scotland's renowned elixir - malt whisky. Immerse yourself in the experience as you have the opportunity to sample some of the whisky yourself. You'll feel a warm and inviting sensation, a heartfelt welcome from the whisky itself, embracing you into the spirit of Scotland.

Tour highlights

  • Deanston Whisky distillery - This impressive distillery sits beside the fast flowing River Teith which generates its own hydroelectric power but with water so soft it produces delightfully sweet and smooth whisky.
  • Doune Castle - Winterfell in Game of thrones and Castle Leoch in outlander, it’s one of the best preserved castle ruins in the whole of the country.
  • Stirling Castle - Scotland’s most important castle back in medieval times, it is known as the ‘Key to Scotland’ due to it’s central location, it sits on castle hill, a crag surrounded by 3 steep cliffs.
  • Glengoyne Whisky distillery - The slowest whisky distiller in Scotland sits behind a beautiful hill with a view to kill, why rush something as perfect as a good Auld Scottish Malt.

Itinerary

We will leave Glasgow and travel north to our first stop, The Deanston Whisky Distillery. The distillery  is situated next to the powerful River Teith where it gets all its water from to produce its fantastic flavours and notes. The River Teith also produces the electricity to power the distillery through a series of turbines  allowing it to be eco-friendly.

On the distillery tour you will learn the process of turning water, malted barley and yeast into Scotland’s most famous drink - malt whisky. You’ll get the chance to sample some yourself during the tour. You will feel a warm and inviting sensation and that feeling is the whisky welcoming you to Scotland.

We will then travel to Castle Leoch, also known as Winterfell, or the Douglas Castle, these are the names in which Doune Castle has been known in the TV series Outlander, Game of Thrones and, my personal favourite, Outlaw King. You will have the chance to stand in the very spots these actors were standing in and feel what it would have been like to be them. The castle is over 600 years old and is in very good condition with Historic Scotland looking after it.

Once we leave Doune castle we have just scratched the surface of learning about Robert the Bruce because our next stop is Stirling castle, the main Castle in Scotland, even more important than Edinburgh Castle because this castle lies in the Heart of Scotland, the very centre and all roads lead to Stirling. You will also learn about all the King James and Mary Queen of Scots whose life was absolutely tragic from a young age.

After Stirling Castle we travel to Glengoyne a smaller Whisky distillery than we visited earlier but in this distillery you will learn how they make their whisky their own. They are the slowest whisky distillers in Scotland and they believe the right way is the long way, unhurried and made to perfection for over 200 years. You will learn how they differ from other whisky distilleries in Scotland.

After you have had the chance to taste their whisky we will head back to Scotlands largest city, Glasgow with the stories and flavours of the day fresh in your minds.

You can ask your guide for information on our other exciting tours we have to offer.

Remember, we also create bespoke tours to suit your needs where we will work together with you to get your perfect unforgettable tour.
